Practical schedule: Test when you move in if unknown; retest every 2 years as a baseline habit; retest after mitigation (verification), after finishing a basement, after major HVAC or foundation work, and when buying/selling.

After mitigation

Complete a short-term verification test per protocol once the system has run long enough. Retest at least every two years afterward—or sooner if the manometer shows loss of pressure or the fan sounds different.

Life events that reset the clock

  • Basement finishing or weatherization projects
  • New HVAC equipment or duct changes
  • Foundation repairs, new sump, or crawl encapsulation
  • Extended vacancy then re-occupancy

Seasonal curiosity

If you only ever tested in mild weather, a winter short-term test can be informative in the Black Hills. See winter vs summer testing.
